I was looking at a photograph of a familiar friend standing in an ordinary room, paused for the shutter-click between the moment just before and those that followed and because they were familiar I knew those moments too, as shadows just on the edge.
I took the image in my mind’s eye and shook it like a snow-dome and the shadows moved. I could see round the edges, the surface trembled, became permeable…

Images drawn from a ring-binder found in a box in the studio in which a sheaf of contact prints and a handful of photo-booth pictures had been left forgotten for forty years.

Attempts at re-animating images from twenty years ago by entering the space between the skin of the person in the image and the thin, tight skin of its surface.
Only when I threw sand at that meniscus, fiddled with the resolution, scratched it with a blade, did it begin to move, but the more damage I did the less remained.
